The views, on the versos of four envelopes, were published by Charles Magnus, N.Y. as part of his series of Civil War patriotic envelopes. Labelled 2A, 2B, 3B and 5B they depict the buildings of the city including the railroad yards and an army encampment. The view of the railroad yard is colored.

Mansfield Lovell (1822-1884) was a major general in the Confederate army who had been appointed to defend New Orleans when it fell to the Union navy. He then commanded an infantry division under Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dorn at the Second Battle of Corinth, Miss.
